An all-star cast of 18 quilt teachers will demonstrate some of their favorite quilting techniques, showcasing a wide variety of styles and techniques. Each demo will be 15 minutes in length. In between each demo, there will be some short and entertaining Zoom tutorials that will help you get the most out of a Zoom workshop. Come when you can, stay as long as you’d like and enjoy.

VIRTUAL LECTURE WITH HOLLIS CHATELAIN “INFLUENCES OF AFRICA”

At our regular 11:00am meeting on February 25, 2021 we will be welcoming Hollis Chatelain virtually, for a one hour lecture. Hollis Chatelain is an internationally renowned, and award-winning, artist. Through a dynamic and characteristic style marked by dreamlike imagery, elaborate use of color, and intricate thread detail, Hollis creates unique compositions that address challenging social, environmental, and political themes. Her work is found in public and private collections all around the world. Leaving the USA with the Peace Corps, just after college, and living 12 years in West Africa has had a major impact on her artwork. During this lecture, using large quilts and photos of her work and her life in Africa, Hollis will lead the audience on a voyage starting with her discovery of African cloth through the evolution of her artwork

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP WITH PHYLLIS CULLEN

Join your FCQ friends for a fun virtual workshop from the comfort of your own sewing space. We will have a live virtual workshop with Phyllis in two parts. Part I is on Saturday January 30, 2021 from 2pm – 5pm and Part II is on Saturday February 6, 2021 from 2pm – 5pm. The cost for both is $30. Use one of Phyllis’ stained-glass patterns or create your own. You will then make a raw-edge fusible, appliquéd and quilted piece that not only looks like real stained glass but requires no fussy edge treatments, no bias tape, no fussy quilting, and is quick, easy, and fun! Then we add some optional oil stick painting, and optional applique, or optional embellishment, and quilt either free motion or walking foot. This class is appropriate for beginners, who will learn basic free motion quilting as well.

VIRTUAL LECTURE WITH Gloria Loughman

Join us for a virtual lecture from Gloria Loughman, who will be joining us from Australia to present her lecture “Share the Journey”.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP WITH NINA CLOTFELTER – “CHOP IT LIKE IT’S HOT!”

We are pleased to announce our first FCQ exclusive live, virtual workshop. You will be able to participate in the all day sewing workshop from the comfort of your home sewing space via Zoom. Even though we can’t be together for a class in person, we can still sew together, learn new skills and have fun! This workshop will be held on Saturday October 17 from 10am – 4pm, with a half hour break for lunch. Nina will be teaching her workshop “Chop It Like It’s HOT!”. We all have scraps left over from every project we do, so let’s make a beautiful wall hanging with them. This class is kind of like the book “The Ugly Duckling” because we take useless and ugly scraps, large and small, and turn them into a gorgeous wall hanging. You’ll use your yarns, sequins, bling of any kind, metallic threads, satin rat tail, anything you want to embellish with, that can be sewn down. Let’s get creative. You will have a fun day with beautiful results!

VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS AND LECTURE WITH BETHANNE NEMESH

Members of Faithful Circle Quilters can now sign up for three different virtual workshops with renowned long arm quilter Bethanne Nemesh. Northern Virginia guild, Quilters Unlimited, is hosting the workshops and has invited other guilds to join. Each workshop is 2 hours. If you sign up for at least one workshop, you can attend the virtual lecture free. Friday November 13, at 10am – Workshop Freehand Florals Friday November 13, at 1pm – Workshop Fast to Fancy: Feathers for Freehand Quilters Saturday November 14, at 10am – Workshop Quilted Texture from A to Zen Saturday November 14, from 2-3pm Lecture: Walk a Creative Path (only for workshop participants).

ROUND ROBIN

Hi my fellow Quilters! I hope all of you are surviving this very strange time in our lives! We are going to run another Round Robin this year.   I’m hoping lots of you will join us.  Everyone is welcomed to participate! This is a chance to practice good techniques and to work outside your comfort zone.  This is done without knowing who will be working on your original block until the final reveal. And you won’t know whose project you are working on until then either.  There will be 8 rounds – 7 exchanges. This will start in August and the final reveal will be in May. If you want to participate: Decide on a block and your focus fabric. Make one block – either an 8” finished (8 ½” unfinished), a 10” finished (10 ½” unfinished), or a 12” finished (12 ½” unfinished) block. It is your choice for size and block. BE CREATIVE and MEASURE CAREFULLY!

DIAMOND DIVAS & DRAMA QUEENS

COLORED GEMSTONES AS DESIGN INSPIRATION

MJ Kinman, textile artist, will present her lecture on Thursday May 7 at 10:30am.  The lecture will be held virtually via zoom.   MJ Kinman makes the biggest diamonds in the world using fabric! She will explain how she was inspired and will share some of her quilting history, along with her quilts.

COMFORT QUILT CHALLENGE

Hopefully everyone is finishing their Mystery Challenge Comfort Quilt. Please register your Challenge quilt (priority 0, along with your other quilts priority 1 -5) for our Facets of Quilting Show, April 16 – 18. It is very inspirational to see fifty Challenge quilts displayed together. During previous shows, visitors have commented on how generous our guild is with our donation quilts. After our quilt show, challenge quilts will be donated to the charity of your choice to provide comfort and cheer. Please indicate on the quilt label so we know where to deliver your donation quilt. Suggested local charities are the following: Adults – Howard County Department of Aging Project Holiday, Loan Closet of Howard County, St Agnes Hospice Babies – Alpha Pregnancy Center Children – Sleep In Heavenly Peace, Howard County General Hospital, TAPS, Project Linus, Binky Patrol Any Age Group – Bridges to Housing, Grassroots Recommended sizes are suggested, but not limited to, baby (32” x 40”), lap (40” x 60”) or twin (60”-70” x 85”-90”

SILENT AUCTION

Silent Auction was again a success this year due to your efforts. We raised $2521 from the following: donations ($506.50), just a $1.00 ($183.50), raffle tickets ($522.00), refreshments ($76.00) and silent auction ($1233.00). Including a $500 donation from the guild will provide the church with $3021 to use in their Thanksgiving Day Basket program. A sincere thank you to all of the guild members!

VIRTUAL LECTURE BY DEBORAH BOSCHERT

Join us for a fascinating virtual lecture from Deborah Boshert where she will present her lecture “Stitching, Symbols, Signature Style” at a special meeting on May 27 at 7pm.

Deborah Boschert is an artist, author and teacher. She creates art quilts with layers of fabric, paint and stitching. The personal symbols and details in her work reflect her experiences and feelings about places she’s lived and the things she’s done. In her art quilts, the tiny details are as important as the over-all design. As in life, every-day little joys compliment the bigger adventures.

Her award-winning art quilts have been exhibited in quilt shows and art galleries throughout the United States and internationally. She has appeared on Quilting Arts TV and The Quilt Show. She is published in many books and magazines. Deborah is the author of Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint and Stitch.

FALL RETREAT WITH JOYCE HUGHES

This year’s Fall retreat at Pecometh will be held Friday, September 27 through Sunday, September 29. Six meals, Friday dinner through Sunday lunch is included. Joyce Hughes will be teaching a Dimensional Thread Painting workshop (Blue Hummingbird panel) on Friday. Lunch that day will be planned as a pot luck, with participants bringing a dish to share. The remainder of the weekend retreat will be UFO sewing time. Pecometh is located near Centreville, MD, and has wonderful sewing space and comfortable hotel style rooms that can be single or double occupancy. The dining room serves farm to table meals which are delicious. There is plenty of space in the facility to lay out quilts, sit in a quiet location, or take a walk outside.

UPCOMING BUS TRIP TO HERSHEY

We will be offering a bus trip to the Hershey Quilt Odyssey 2019 on Saturday July 27, 2019. The cost will be $57, which includes transportation, driver gratuity, and show admission. There will be two pick up points offered this year: The first at the Park and Ride at Rt. 108 and Presbyterian Circle, Columbia at 8:00 a.m. And the second at Deereco Road and Greenspring, Timonium at 8:30 a.m. We will return at approximately 7:30 p.m. There will be a dinner stop at Cracker Barrel (on your own) en route home.

WORKSHOP AND LECTURE

Debby Kratovil will give a lecture and trunk show on Thursday, May 9th at our regular Thursday meeting. She will also be teaching a full day workshop, “Cloisonne Diamonds,” on Saturday May 11th. This is a class for all levels of quilters. Try your hand at stitching 4 patch diamonds and setting them with a bold and beautiful print diamond. There are no set-in seams or funky templates involved. All are rotary cut, using a standard ruler with a 60º marked line. The option of making a variety of quilt sizes will appeal to everyone. Make and finish a small project in class to try the technique, or make a larger bed sized quilt. This is a great scrappy-quilt project also.

TAPS QUILTS

FCQ donated 14 quilts to Montgomery County Project Linus and 9 quilts to Howard County Project Linus for this year’s TAPS Good Grief Camp. THANK YOU to everyone who donated fabric, sewed blocks, pieced quilt tops, machine quilted, and stitched bindings. If you still have a TAPS block, please return it ASAP. We are waiting for members to return blocks so we can finish quilt top kits for next year’s TAPS quilts.

NICU HEARTS

KAREN MAGGIO, nurse manager of the Howard County Hospital NICU, would like FCQ members to know (that): “The Hearts program is going VERY well. The parents love it. They say that it makes them feel better leaving their babies here each day knowing that their scent is with their baby. We cannot thank FCQ enough for your generous donation of the hearts.”

A QUILTED JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD WITH LINDA M POOLE

This is the title of the lecture Linda M Poole will be giving for FCQ on Thursday March 21. Look at the world through the eyes of American and International quilters and see what inspires them in their quilts. Linda will also be teaching a full day workshop on Saturday March 23 on her fabric painting techniques. The class will be her Monarch Butterfly (class fee of $70 includes a kit fee). You will learn to paint, blend and shade with Inktense ink pencils and pigments. Doodle designs get added to your butterfly to make it your one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Learning from Linda, an experienced painter and quilt instructor, will be a class to remember. She promises that anyone can do this!

FCQ WELCOMES BECKY GOLDSMITH

We are pleased to announce our final guest lecturer and teacher for 2018, Becky Goldsmith. Becky is part of the “Piece O’ Cake Designs” team of well-known pattern designers, authors, educators and quilt artists. She will be presenting her lecture “A Practical Approach to Color” on Thursday November 8 at 10:30am at the guild meeting. Becky will be teaching three workshops.

SILENT AUCTION

The members of Faithful Circle Quilters are the greatest people! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in ways big and small for making the Silent Auction a successful event again this year. The variety of items is always intriguing, sometimes the bidding gets pretty active, and the raffle ticket sales went well. This year we brought in $2,043.00 in sales and donations. In addition, the guild is donating $500, bringing the total gift to First Presbyterian Church of Howard County to more than $2,500. We will be presenting our check to the deacons in charge of the Thanksgiving ‘basket’ project within the next couple of weeks.

TEE SHIRTS

It’s that time of year again!! Howard County Hospital’s Emergency Room has an urgent need for plain white undershirts (tee shirts) for children and adults who arrive with ruined/soiled shirts. I will be collecting these undershirts at the November meetings through the Holiday Luncheon in December. Shirts must be new and still in the package. The hospital needs children’s tees in medium, large, and extra-large sizes, and adult tees in small, medium, and large sizes. They can be found in most department stores, and even some craft stores. Early shopping reports the lowest prices at WalMart. As always, thank you for your generosity

KOMEN QUILT FOR THE CURE OCTOBER 2018

We are collecting donation quilts to be raffled at the Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Komen raffle quilts can be any size, any color, any pattern and are due by October 1st.

EXCITING LECTURE AND WORKSHOPS JOEN WOLFRAM COMING TO FCQ

At our meeting on Thursday September 6, Joen Wolfram will be giving a lecture called “Adventures in Design – Creating Spectacular Quilts.” She will be presenting a multitude of ways to design quilts by considering design choices, innovative ideas, border concerns and quilt design pit-falls. She will be presenting some very basic design concepts which can make the difference between an OK-looking quilt and a stunning quilt. Joen will be teaching two separate, non-sewing, workshops.

FALL SHOPPING TRIP

The Fall Shopping trip will be Friday, October 5, 2018. Stops will include Wilbur’s Chocolate retail store, Lititz Family Cupboard and Bakery (lunch) and Weaver’s Dry Goods, all in Lititz, PA, and the Kitchen Kettle Village (Old Country Store and Zook’s) in Intercourse. The cost of $60.00 includes transportation, driver gratuity, and lunch. Departure time from the Park and Ride across from the church is 7:30 a.m. We will return about 7:30 p.m.

MYSTERY CHALLENGE

The mystery quilt challenge, which will start in September, has two advantages for our members. It can be made in a number of sizes, and it can be ‘scrappy.’  In September, the challenge blocks will be half-square triangles (HST). I will demo two methods of making HST during the first Thursday meeting in September (9/6) and the last Monday meeting in August (8/27). We are giving you the fabric requirements now so you can think it over and check out your stash during the summer. The first step will be in the September newsletter.

MARY HUEY LECTURE AND WORKSHOP

On Thursday July 26, we will be hosting Mary Huey as a guest lecturer at our meeting. The lecture starts at 10:30am and will be held at the Elkridge Library in the Belmont meeting room. Please note the change of meeting location! Mary’s lecture is entitled “UFO Assault Tactics.” This should be a fun lecture with lots of helpful tips about how to make better progress on the many UFO quilters tend to accumulate. On Saturday July 28, Mary will be teaching a full day workshop “Scrappy String Star.” This workshop will be held at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center in Glenwood. Scrappy String Star is a large scale 8-pointed star — blocks about 18″ square — which uses up lots of bits and incorporates a little bit of y-seam piecing to assemble the diamonds. Mary will teach the Set-In Piecing Simplified technique. Four of these blocks make a good size lap quilt! The class will be held from 9:00am-4:00pm and costs $50.

2018 PROJECT LINUS ALPHABET CHALLENGE

Thanks to a fabric donation and the creativity of our members, there were 52 Project Linus Alphabet Challenge quilts displayed at our show. If you had the opportunity to white glove in the Linus or Choir room, you heard many positive comments about the quality and quantity of our donation quilts. Each child receiving an alphabet quilt will feel the love and warmth of our quilted hugs.

FCQ EDUCATIONAL EVENT

Terry Kramzar will be giving a lecture at our Monday meeting on May 21 at 7pm. Her lecture, entitled “Inspired by Adventure”, will be a trunk show and talk about her adventures and how they have inspired her creative process. Terry’s work is very diverse, ranging from pictorial to abstract, pieced to applique, innovative to traditional.\Terry will be teaching an all day workshop on Saturday May 26. Her workshop is titled “Pieced Quilting in Layers”. In the workshop, students will bring their gorgeous fabrics and play with color and texture to create a small art quilt to learn her innovative technique for quilting – not free motion quilting — just straight stitching with a regular foot. This is similar to “quilt as you go” but the backing is one piece. She’ll also teach perfect Knife Edge Binding for an artful finish. C

SPRING RETREAT

The 2018 FCQ Spring Retreat will once again be held at Black Rock Retreat Center in Quarryville, PA from May 17-20. This is a UFO retreat and participants may choose to arrive on Thursday or Friday and stay through Sunday. Prices are based on double occupancy and include 24 hour access to the sewing room and all meals. Total cost is $260 per person for Friday – Sunday (including lunch Friday through Breakfast Sunday) or $340 per person for Thursday – Sunday (including dinner Thursday through Breakfast Sunday). Deposits of $50 for the retreat in the form of checks made out to FCQ will be taken starting January 1, with final balances due February 1
